Section II
Customer complaints and/or conditions caused by faulty components after a new MEM-CAL has been installed.CONDITION: High, varying, or unstable idle.
CAUSES:
^ Throttle angle not equal to zero or unstable. (Damaged TPS because of an improper adjustment practice.)
^ Minimum air has been improperly adjusted.
^ EGR valve not seated, check for debris or improper operation, the pintle should have no movement when the coolant temperature is below 60 degrees centigrade.
^ Cruise control cable too tight, throttle cable binding, throttle plate shaft binding.
^ IACV counts less than 9, with the engine running in "Closed Loop," the desired idle RPM is 700 (A/T) 850 (M/T).
CORRECTION: Refer to Bulletin #:
Olds = 88-T-82, Chev = 88-165-6E,
Canada = 88-628-119, Olds = 39-4,
Olds = 40-5
NOTE: After the condition has been corrected, follow the Idle Learn Procedure in "MISC-TEST" (F4) using the Tech 1 Scan Tool.
CONDITION: Cold start sag, stall, exit ramp deceleration stall
CAUSES:
^ Minimum air too low, CLEAN throttle bore.
Bulletin #: Chev = 87-109,
Pont = 87-6G-32A, Buick = 88-6E-25,
Cad = T-87-136, Canada = 87-628-109,
Olds = 37-9
NOTE: After the condition has been corrected, follow the Idle Learn Procedure in "MISC. TEST" (F4) using the Tech 1 Scan Tool.
^ IACV counts greater than 20. should be 9- 20 counts with 700 (A/T), 850 (M/T), desired RPM.
^ Vacuum leaks, PCV hose leaking at valve.
CORRECTION: Brake assist leak, gasket leaks. Isolate vacuum leaks by pinching rubber portions of hoses with pliers or clamps. (DO NOT PINCH HARD PLASTIC HOSES).
CONDITION: Hard start, false start, no start or hot decel/stall.
CAUSE: IAC valve pintle movement
CORRECTION: Refer to Bulletin #:
Chev = 90-62-6E Pont = 89-6-69
Buick = 90-6E-2 Canada = 90-631-101
Olds = 89-T-136
NOTE: After the condition has been corrected, follow the Idle Learn Procedure in "MISC. TEST" (F4) using the Tech 1 Scan Tool.
CONDITION: Hesitation, cold sometimes hot. Manual transaxle cannot launch, stalls.
CAUSE: (1990)
^ Digital EGR port open.
CORRECTION: Diagnose and repair valve per service manual section 6E3-C7.
CAUSE: (1987-1989)
^ EVRV solenoid allows EGR valve to operate below 60 degrees centigrade, coolant temperature.
CORRECTION: Replace Valve.
For spark diagnosis and base engine diagnosis the Service Manual should be used.
