Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Relieve fuel pressure, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction / Service and Repair.
Then remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Drain coolant, disconnect vacuum lines and electrical connectors.
3. Remove accelerator linkage, then coolant reservoir.
4. Remove serpentine belt, alternator, power steering pump, then serpentine drive belt tensioner.
5. Remove secondary ignition wires, then canister purge line from under manifold.
6. Remove upper radiator hose, throttle body cables from bracket, then heater hoses (from manifold).
7. Remove intake manifold brace from power steering bracket, then fuel lines.
8. Remove rocker arm cover, rocker arms, then pushrods (figure 9).

NOTE: When valve train components are removed they should be kept in order. Install in same location with same mating surfaces as when removed.

9. Remove secondary ignition cable bracket, engine lift bracket, then front exhaust pipe.
10. Remove head bolts, then on models equipped with automatic transaxle remove fluid level indicator bracket.
11. Remove cylinder head.

ASSEMBLY
1. Ensure mating surfaces are clean, then install head using new gasket.
2. Install the head bolts and tighten to specifications in sequence (figure 11).
3. Connect the throttle body cables and transaxle remove fluid level indicator bracket (if equipped).
4. Install the front exhaust pipe, the engine lift and secondary ignition cable brackets.
5. Install the rocker arms and tighten to specifications then install the push rods and rocker arm cover.
6. Install the fuel lines and the intake manifold brace from power steering bracket.
7. Connect the vacuum lines and electrical connectors at TBI then the heater hoses.
8. Install the upper radiator hose, ignition wires and the canister purge line from under manifold.
9. Install the serpentine drive belt tensioner, power steering pump and the alternator, then the serpentine belt.
10. Install the coolant reservoir and connect accelerator linkage.
11. Install the air cleaner assembly and fill cooling system.

Inspect For
