IGNITION KEY AND LOCK CYLINDER CHANGES

Model and Year:
1993 CAVALIER

General Motors has made styling and design improvements to the ignition keys and lock cylinders. This change removes the center groove on each side of the key and shortens the outer groove by 8 mm. (See Figure 1). The old key blank (P/ N 26018738) is interchangeable on both old and new lock cylinders. The new key blank is functional only in a new lock cylinder since internal lock modifications were made to accept the removal of the center key grooves. These changes were made in November of 1992 (1993 model year).

Dealers should continue to use the old key blank (P/N 26018738) on BOTH old and new lock cylinders to maintain interchangeability and to avoid changes in key cutter equipment.

LOCK CYLINDER PARTS INFORMATION:

When servicing of the lock cylinder is required, the part numbers have been changed (see illustration).

KEY CUTTER PARTS INFORMATION:

There is no need to change key cutter equipment since the key blank is not changing. If there is difficulty cutting ignition keys, please contact your local key cutter representative. Two suppliers are listed, however, other suppliers may be contacted on an individual basis.

Aftermarket suppliers may create a new key blank. Using this key blank can create interchangeability problems between old and new lock cylinders.

We believe these sources and their equipment to be reliable. There may be additional manufacturers of such equipment. General Motors does not endorse, indicate any preference for or assume any responsibility for the products or equipment from these firms or for any such item which may be available from other sources.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
