Removal and Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove TV cable from throttle lever and transaxle.2. Remove battery.
3. Remove fluid level indicator and filler tube.
4. Remove bolt securing wiring harness to transaxle, then disconnect electrical connectors from TCC and park/neutral switch.
5. Remove upper shift control cable bracket and disconnect cable form shift lever at transaxle.
6. Remove rubber hose from vent pipe to transaxle.
7. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
8. Install engine support tools No. J28467 and J35943 or equivalents.
9. Remove top two transaxle to engine mounting bolts and transaxle mounting bracket bolts, then the mounting bracket.
10. Remove remaining upper transaxle to engine bolts. Raise and support vehicle.
11. Remove front wheels and left front engine splash shield.
12. Install axle boot protector tool No. J34754 to protect boot from damage. Failure to protect boot may result in boot damage and joint failure.
13. Remove left and right drive axles as follows:
a. Place a screwdriver through caliper, into rotor, to prevent from turning.
b. Remove drive axle nut and washer.
c. Remove ball joint coffer pin and nut. Separate ball joint from control arm with removal tool No. J29330 or equivalent.
d. Disengage axle from hub and bearing using removal tool No. J28733-A or equivalent.
e. Separate hub and bearing assembly from drive axle and move strut and knuckle assembly rearward.
f. Remove inner joints from transaxle using inner joint removal tools No. J28468 and J29794 or equivalents.
14. Remove both stabilizer links and left stabilizer bar clamp nuts.
15. Remove left suspension supports and bolts.
16. Remove transaxle strut bolts from transaxle, then disconnect vehicle speed sensor electrical connector from transaxle.
17. Remove converter cover, then the flywheel to converter bolts. Mark relationship of flywheel to converter to ease installation.
18. Disconnect and plug transaxle cooler lines. Remove shift cable from lower cable bracket.
19. Remove transaxle to engine brace bolts.
20. Position suitable transaxle jack below assembly. Remove remaining engine to transaxle mounting bolts.
21. Carefully lower transaxle from vehicle.
22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque transaxle mounting bolts to 55 ft. lbs., transaxle brace bolts to 37 ft. lbs. and cooler lines at transaxle to 16 ft. lbs.
b. Torque torque converter to flywheel bolts to 46 ft. lbs. and converter cover bolts to 115 inch lbs.
c. Torque strut bolts to 44 ft. lbs., stabilizer bolts to 17 ft. lbs. and link nuts to 13 ft. lbs.
d. Torque transaxle mounting bolts to 55 ft. lbs., top transaxle to engine bolts to 55 ft. lbs., transaxle mounting bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs., bracket mounting bolt to 18 ft. lbs. and TV cable mounting bolt to 89 inch lbs.
e. Adjust TV cable, shift linkage and fluid level. Check for leaks.
