Fuel Pump: Testing and Inspection

PROCEDURE:

1. Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel feed line. Refer to Fuel Pressure Release Procedure.
2. Disconnect the fuel feed line at the engine, and connect a hose from the feed line to a suitable unbreakable container.
3. Energize the fuel pump for 15 seconds, then observe how much fuel the pump dispensed during the 15 second interval. The fuel pump can be turned "ON" using one of the following methods:
- Using a "Scan" tool
- Bridge terminals 1 & 4 of the fuel pump relay harness connector
- Remove the fuel pump #1 fuse and apply battery power, through a 10 Amp fuse, to the fuel pump #1 fuse terminal.Apply battery voltage to the fuel pump test terminal (terminal "G" of ALDL).
4. The fuel pump should supply 1/2 pint or more of fuel in 15 seconds.
5. If flow is below minimum, check for fuel restrictions.
6. For further diagnosis of the electric fuel pump, refer to Computers and Control Systems. Testing and Inspection
