Removal and Replacement
HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Tools Required:
^ J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J 28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapters
^ J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg
^ J 35944 Oil Cooler and Line Flusher
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
3. Drain cooling system.
4. Radiator hose at engine.
5. Engine torque strut.
6. Air cleaner silencer assembly.
7. Engine torque strut bracket at engine.
8. T.V. cable at transaxle and throttle body.
9. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
10. Front exhaust pipe-to-intermediate exhaust pipe bolts/screws.
11. Exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold bolts/screws.
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Front exhaust pipe and pipe bracket bolt/screw.
14. Shift control cable at lever and bracket.
15. T.C.C. electrical connector.
16. Transaxle vent hose.
17. Electrical grounds at transaxle-to-engine bolts/screws.
18. Upper transaxle-to-engine bolts/screws.
19. Install J 28467-A, J 28467-90 and J 36462.
20. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
21. Front tire and wheel assemblies.
22. Ball joints at control arms.
23. Powertrain nuts at frame.
24. Steering gear heat shield.
25. Steering gear retaining bolts/screws.
^ Support steering gear at the body.
26. Both engine splash shields.
27. Install jack stands to frame.
28. Frame retaining bolts/screws.
29. Frame assembly.
30. Flywheel inspection cover.
31. Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts/screws.
32. Wiring harness at transaxle bracket.
33. Neutral start switch electrical connectors.
34. Vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
35. Transaxle oil cooler lines.
36. Drive axles at transaxle. Support at body.
37. Transaxle brace-to-transaxle bolts/screws.
38. Install transaxle jack.
39. Lower transaxle-to-engine bolts/screws.
40. Transaxle assembly.
IMPORTANT
^ Transaxle oil cooler lines should be flushed with J 35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement or the torque converter, pump or case.
INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures, refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Lower transaxle-to-engine bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.).
3. Remove transaxle jack.
4. Transaxle brace-to-transaxle bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 47 N.m (35 lb. ft.).
5. Drive axles to transaxle.
6. Transaxle oil cooler lines.
7. Vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
8. Neutral start switch electrical connectors.
9. Wiring harness to transaxle bracket.
10. Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 63 N.m (46 lb. ft.).
11. Flywheel inspection cover.
12. Frame assembly.
13. Frame retaining bolts/screws.
14. Remove jackstands from frame.
15. Both engine splash shields.
16. Steering gear retaining bolts/screws.
17. Steering gear heat shield.
18. Powertrain nuts to frame.
Tighten
^ Nuts to 44 N.m (32 lb. ft.).
19. Ball joints at control arms.
20. Front tire and wheel assemblies.
21. Lower vehicle.
22. Remove J 28467-A, J 28467-90 and J 36462.
23. Upper transaxle-to-engine bolts/screws.
Tighten
^ Bolts/screws to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.).
24. Electrical grounds to transaxle-to-engine bolts/screws.
25. Transaxle vent hose.
26. T.C.C. electrical connector.
27. Shift control cable to lever and bracket.
28. Front exhaust pipe and pipe bracket bolt/screw.
29. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
30. Exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold bolts/screws.
31. Front exhaust pipe-to-intermediate exhaust pipe bolts/screws.
32. Lower vehicle.
33. T.V. cable to transaxle and throttle body.
34. Engine torque strut bracket to engine.
35. Air cleaner silencer assembly.
36. Engine torque strut.
37. Radiator hose to engine.
38. Refill cooling system.
39. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
40. Negative battery cable.
ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift linkage.
INSPECT
^ For proper completion of repairs.
^ For fluid leaks.
