Engine: Service and Repair

Fig. 1 Transaxle Mount Replacement:






1. Relieve fuel system pressure as described see Fuel Pressure Relief. Under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Procedures/Diagnostic Charts/A Charts/Chart A-7 Fuel System Diagnosis.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove front wheels.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. Disconnect heater hoses.
7. Remove upper radiator hose.
8. Remove coolant fan.
9. Properly discharge A/C system. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
10. Remove oil filter.
11. Remove A/C compressor to condenser refrigerant line.
12. Disconnect all electrical connectors and vacuum lines necessary to facilitate engine removal.
13. Remove battery ground cable to engine block retaining bolt, then battery cable.
14. Separate shift cable from bracket.
15. Disconnect vacuum hose from brake booster.
16. Disconnect accelerator cable, then remove bracket, Fig. 3 .

17. Remove power steering pump assembly with hoses attached, Fig. 6, and position aside.

18. Remove oil air separator.
19. Disconnect engine compartment fuel lines.
20. On models with manual transaxle, remove clutch actuator.
21. On all models, disconnect engine oil cooler lines from adapter.
22. Remove exhaust manifold as described later in this section.
23. Remove front engine mount retaining nut, Fig. 5 .

24. Remove lower radiator hose and heater hose.
25. Install engine support tool No. J-28467, or equivalent.
26. Remove splash shields.
27. Separate ball joints from steering knuckles, then stabilizer shafts from both control arms.
28. Remove drive axles as described in Transmission and Drivetrain.
29. Remove suspension support.
30. Remove ground strap from block.
31. Remove rear engine mount assembly.
32. Remove transaxle mount through bolt.
33. Lower engine.
34. Disconnect starter wires.
35. On models equipped with manual transmission, throttle body coolant pipes must be removed before engine is removed. Do not bent coolant pipes to gain clearance.
36. Remove engine and transaxle assembly.
37. Reverse procedure to install noting following:
a. On models with manual transaxle, bleed hydraulic clutch system as described in Clutch & Manual Transaxle.
b. Replenish all fluids as needed.
c. When recharging A/C system refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
d. Check wheel alignment, refer to Wheel Alignment. Under Steering and Suspension/Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
