Vehicle Speed Sensor: Description and Operation

Vehicle Speed Sensor Wiring Diagram:

Purpose:
The VSS produces an A/C voltage signal that increases with vehicle speed. The ECM supplies the necessary signals to the instrument panel and utilizes the information to control the TCC and shift solenoids.

Operation:
The voltage level and number of pulses increases with vehicle speed. The ECM converts the pulsing voltage to mph.

The VSS system uses an inductive sensor mounted in the transmission to measure speed of the transmission output shaft. The VSS generates a voltage waveform, the frequency of this waveform determines vehicle speed.

Location:
The Vehicle Speed sensor is mounted in the tail section of the transmission.
