Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
LEFTHAND
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine coolant into suitable container, then remove rocker arm cover.
3. Remove intake manifold as described under Intake Manifold.
4. Remove exhaust crossover at right side exhaust manifold.
5. Remove oil dipstick tube bracket.
6. Loosen rocker arm nuts until pushrods can be removed. Keep pushrods in order they are removed so they can be installed in their original position.
7. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then cylinder head.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Clean cylinder head bolts and cylinder head bolt holes with suitable solvent.
b. Position new head gasket on deck surface over dowel pins with, this Side Up facing up, then install cylinder head.
c. Using sequence torque cylinder head bolts in two steps; first step to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.), second step an additional 90°.
RIGHTHAND
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove right side exhaust manifold.
2. Lower vehicle, then remove rocker arm cover.
3. Remove intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold for procedure.
4. Loosen rocker arm nuts until pushrods can be removed. Keep pushrods in order they are removed so they can be installed in their original position.
5. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then cylinder head.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Clean cylinder head bolts and cylinder head bolt holes with suitable solvent.
b. Position new head gasket on deck surface over dowel pins with, this Side Up facing up, then install cylinder head.
c. Using sequence torque cylinder head bolts in two steps; first step to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.), second step an additional 90°.
