If shims are used between starter and engine block, they should be placed in their original location during installation. If starter is noisy during cranking, remove one .015 inch double shim or add one .015 single shim to the outer bolt. If starter makes a high pitched whine after firing, add .015 inch double shims until noise ceases.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove intake plenum assembly. Refer to Intake Air Plenum. Service and Repair
3. Remove ignition coil pack. Refer to Ignition System / Coil Pack. Service and Repair
4. Disconnect battery positive cable and electrical leads from starter motor.
5. Remove starter motor to engine block attaching bolts, then remove starter motor, Fig. 8.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installation, coat threads of starter mounting bolts with Loctite 262 or equivalent.
b. Torque starter mounting bolts to 38 ft. lbs.
