Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

On-Board Diagnostic Information

When the vehicle is started, the EBTCM performs a functional test of the electrical circuits. The test cycle inspects the monitoring system components and system logic; the cycle is completed in about six seconds. An additional AUTO test operates the modulator valve assembly when the vehicle is started and vehicle speed reaches 4 mph in forward or reverse. The modulator valve assembly, EBTCM, lateral accelerometer, wheel speed sensors and wiring harness and relays are continuously monitored.

The EBTCM monitors its own voltage supply, if the supply drops below a specified minimum value, the ABS/TCS or ABS/ASR lamp will not be illuminated and the Service ABS lamp will be illuminated. When voltage exceeds the specified minimum value, the Service ABS lamp will go out. If a fault occurs in the ABS system the warning lamp will be illuminated, the ABS system will be turned Off until the ignition switch is cycled Off then On, then the functional inspection will be repeated. The standard brake system will remain fully operational. Under normal driving conditions the ABS functions the same as a standard power assisted brake system.

Brake pedal pulsation and occasional tire noise are normal during ABS operation on dry pavement. During light braking in a turn, the rear brake pressure may be modulated to enhance vehicle stability under certain conditions. A slight brake pedal vibration may be experienced during light braking with lateral acceleration speeds above 30 mph.
