Removal and Replacement
TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENTNOTICE: In order to prevent the vapor blow pipe assembly (located at the rear of the engine) from damaging the dash panel, you must support the engine before removing the transmission assembly.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
3. Raise the vehicle.
4. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
5. Remove the upper and lower underbody braces, if equipped.
6. Remove the complete exhaust system.
7. Suitably support the transmission.
8. Remove the driveline support beam.
9. Remove the propeller shaft.
10. Disconnect the speedometer electrical connector.
11. Remove the shift control cable.
12. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the transmission.
13. Remove the converter cover.
IMPORTANT: Mark the alignment of the flywheel and the torque converter in order to retain proper balance.
14. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts.
15. Remove the oil cooler pipes at the transmission.
16. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
17. Remove the transmission. Use the J 21366.
18. Flush the transmission oil cooler and the pipes with J 35944-A whenever you remove the transmission for overhaul, or replacement of the torque converter, the pump, or the transmission case.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Tools Required:
^ J 21366
IMPORTANT: After installing driveline support, check the air intake duct to throttle body mating surface. If the air duct becomes dislodged from the throttle body, a driveability problem may occur.
1. Install the transmission. Use the J 21366.
2. Install the transmission to engine bolts.
Tighten
^ The bolts to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
3. Install the oil cooler pipes at the transmission.
IMPORTANT: Hand start all flywheel to converter bolts before torquing. This will ensure the proper alignment and avoid cross threading.
4. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
5. Install the converter cover and bolts.
6. Install the electrical connectors at the transmission.
7. Install the shift control cable.
8. Connect the speedometer electrical connector.
9. Install the propeller shaft.

10. Install the driveline support beam.
11. Install the complete exhaust system.
12. Install the upper and lower underbody braces, if equipped.
13. Lower the vehicle.

15. Connect the negative battery cable.
