DESCRIPTION
The 1-4 upshift system requires the vehicle to be shifted from first gear to fourth gear under certain conditions. When in operation, the 1-4 upshift solenoid in the transmission prevents the linkage from engaging second and third gears. By shifting from 1st to 4th gear during specified engine conditions, fuel economy is improved.

OPERATION
The 1-4 upshift solenoid is permanently grounded on one side and becomes energized when power is supplied from the relay. When energized, the solenoid moves a pin in the linkage assembly inside the transmission that blocks the linkage from engaging 2nd or 3rd gear.

LOCATION
The solenoid assembly is installed in the left side of the transmission.
