Engine Control Module: Service and Repair

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Mounting:

Knock Sensor (KS) Module:

Knock Sensor (KS) Module Removal:

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) AND COMPONENTS REPLACEMENT

NOTE: To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge darnage to the PCM. Do Not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board.

Remove or Disconnect

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Right side kick pad and trim.
3. PCM harness connectors.
4. PCM from mounting bracket.
5. PCM from passenger compartment.
6. Knock Sensor (KS) module. Refer to KS System. Knock Sensor

Important

^ The KS module must be transferred to the replacement PCM.
^ The replacement PCM is supplied without a Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) program, the replacement PCM must be programmed before the vehicle will run.

IF PCM IS BEING REPLACED

Remove or Disconnect

1. New PCM from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same as the defective PCM.
2. Access cover.

EEPROM PROGRAMMING

1. Set-up:
^ Battery is charged.
^ Ignition is "ON."
^ Battery/cig. lighter connection secure.
^ Data Link Connector (DLC) must be secure.

2. Refer to up-to-date Techline terminal/equipment user's instructions.
3. If PCM fails to program, do the following:

^ Check all PCM connections.
^ Check Techline terminal/equipment for latest software version.
^ Try again to program the PCM. If it fails again, replace the PCM. Replacement PCM must be programmed.

4. If vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket anti.theft system, it may require a reset procedure. Refer to appropriate service manual/section.

Functional Check

^ Use Techline terminal/equipment to verify proper operation of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)"Service Engine Soon."

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. KS module.
2. Access cover on PCM.
3. Connectors to PCM.
4. PCM located in passenger compartment.
5. PCM in mounting bracket.
6. Right side kick pad and trim.
7. Negative battery cable.
