Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Tool Required: J 36660 Torque/Angle Meter and J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture.

Remove or Disconnect

1. Relieve fuel system pressure,under Fuel Pressure Relief. Under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Procedures/Diagnostic Charts/A Charts/Chart A-7 Fuel System Diagnosis.
2. Negative battery cable.
3. Air cleaner outlet duct.
4. Vacuum lines.
5. The following electrical connections:

^ Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT).
^ Oxygen Sensor (02S).
^ Idle Air control (IAC).
^ Throttle Position Sensor (TP).
^ Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP).
^ Evaporative Emissions EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid.
^ Injector harness.

6. Accelerator control, cruise and TV cables from accelerator control bracket.
7. Accelerator control cable bracket.
8. Raise vehicle.
9. Exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
10. Drain and recover coolant.
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Serpentine drive belt.
13. Generator rear brace.
14. Generator.
15. Power steering. pump and position aside with lines attached.
16. Power steering pump bracket.
17. Install engine support fixture J 28467-A using a bolt installed in the engine block to attach engine support fixture.
18. Serpentine drive belt tensioner bracket.
19. Secondary ignition wires from spark plugs.
20. EVAP Canister purge line beneath manifold.
21. Upper radiator hose from coolant outlet.
22. Heater hose from coolant outlet.
23. Nut attaching automatic transaxle filler tube to intake manifold.
24. Fuel lines.
25. Valve rocker arm cover.

Important: Whenever valve train components are removed for service, they should be kept in order. They should be installed in the same locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.

26. Rocker arms and push rods.
27. Cylinder head bolts.
28. Cylinder head.

Clean: Head gasket surfaces, valve rocker arm cover gasket surfaces and threads. Dirt affects bolt torque.

Inspect: Cylinder head and rocker arm studs for stripped threads. Cylinder head gasket surfaces for nicks, heavy scratches and flatness.


Install or Connect

Important: Do not use sealer on the head gasket.

1. Cylinder head gasket over dowel pins on cylinder block.
2. Carefully guide cylinder head into place over dowel pins and gasket.
3. Install cylinder head bolts. Tighten bolts in sequence. Refer to image.

^ Long bolts to 63 Nm (46 lbs. ft.) plus 90° using J 36660.
^ Short bolts to 58 Nm (43 lbs. ft.) plus 90° using J 36660.

4. Rocker arms and push rods.
5. Valve rocker arm cover.
6. Fuel lines.
7. Nut attaching automatic transaxle filler tube to intake manifold. Tighten nut to 27 Nm (20 lbs. ft.).
8. Heater hose to coolant outlet.
9. Upper radiator hose to coolant outlet.
10. EVAP Canister purge line.
11. Secondary ignition wires to spark plugs.
12. Serpentine drive belt tensioner bracket and bolts. Tighten bolts to 50 Nm (37 lbs. ft.).
13. Remove engine support fixture J 28467-A and bolt used to support engine.
14. Power steering pump bracket.
15. Power steering pump.
16. Generator.
17. Generator rear brace.
18. Serpentine drive belt.
19. Raise vehicle.
20. Exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold.
21. Lower vehicle.
22. Accelerator control cable bracket and bolts. Tighten bolts to 25 Nm (18 lbs. in.).
23. Accelerator control, cruise and TV cables to accelerator control bracket.
24. The following electrical connections:

^ Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT).
^ Oxygen Sensor (02S).
^ IAC.
^ Throttle Position Sensor (TP).
^ MAP.
^ EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid.
^ Injector harness.

25. Vacuum lines.
26. Air cleaner outlet duct.
27. Refill coolant.
28. Negative battery cable.
