Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Installation/Adjustment:

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Throttle Position Sensor (TP) sensor electrical connector.
2. Remove two TP sensor attaching screws.
3. TP sensor.

CAUTION: The TP sensor is an electrical component and must NOT be soaked in any liquid cleaner or solvent as damage may result.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. With the throttle valve in the normally closed idle position, install throttle position sensor on throttle body assembly, making sure TP sensor pickup lever lines up with tang on throttle actuator lever.
2. TP sensor screws. DO NOT tighten screws till sensor is adjusted.

Adjust
1. Install scan tool or 3 jumper wires and DVM.
2. With ignition "ON," adjust sensor between 0.23 to 0.59 volt.

Tighten
TP sensor screws to 2.0 Nm (18.0 lb. in.).

3. TP Electrical connector.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR LEARN PROCEDURE
If the Throttle Position (TP) sensor or throttle body is replaced, the Electronic Brake Transmission Control Module (EBTCM) must "learn" the TP sensor idle position voltage with the new component(s) installed. This is necessary to ensure effective engine torque reduction during ASR events. The procedure requires a T-1 (Tech 1) Scanner or T-1OO (CAMS) unit, and will be described using a Tech 1.

1. Ignition "OFF."
2. Connect Tech 1 with Mass Storage cartridge.
3. Ignition "ON."
4. Follow menus to reach ABS/ASR features.
5. Select "F5: TP SENSR LRN."
6. Press t to begin learn procedure.
7. Wait for Tech 1 to indicate "COMPLETE."
8. Ignition "OFF."
9. Disconnect Tech 1.
