DISASSEMBLE
1. Remove extension housing and speed sensor gear as outlined in Extension Housing & Speed Sensor Gear.

2. Remove reverse idler gear as outlined in Reverse Idler Gear.

3. Rotate support and assembly fixture so input shaft is facing up, then remove countershaft seal from front case using toot No. J 37107-1 or equivalent.






4. Remove countershaft nut from countershaft using tool No. J-38131 or equivalent while holding input shaft with tool No. J 38746 or equivalent, then discard nut.

5. Remove washer, bearing retainer flange bolts from bearing retainer, then bearing assembly and gasket.

6. Remove selective shim, then separate retainer flange from bearing retainer assembly.

7. Remove 0-ring from retainer flange, then input shaft seal from bearing retainer tube.

8. Remove snap ring from front case, gearshift detent bolt, then gearshift shaft detent inner and outer springs and detent.

9. Remove gear select solenoid assembly, then back-up lamp switch and pin.

10. Rotate support and fixture assembly so output shaft is facing up, then remove three gearshift rail detent sealing caps using tool Nos. J 6125-B and adapter J 37107 or equivalents.

11. Remove gearshift rail detent springs, then detent pins.

12. Remove snap rings and washer from output shaft, then remove bolts and stud attaching front and rear case. Note location of stud and wiring harness.






13. Separate front case from rear case using tool Nos. J 38129 and J 8433 or equivalents, then discard gasket.






14. Remove output shaft output bearing from rear case, then countershaft rear bearing from rear case using tool Nos. J 8433, J 38128 and J 36038 or equivalents.

15. Pry gearshift shaft seal from rear of case, then remove gearshift shaft bearing assembly from rear case using tool No. J 38127.

16. Remove gearshift rail detent sealing cap from left side of front case, then gearshift rail detent spring and detent pin.

17. Remove gearshift shaft by pulling upward while rotating back and forth to clear shift forks.

18. Remove 1-2 shift fork roll pin lock and roll pin from shift fork.

19. Slide gearshift out of shift fork until rail end clears front of case rail boss, then remove reverse shift fork pin lock and roll pin from reverse shift fork.

20. Remove shift rail from gearshift fork. Hold reverse synchronizer sleeve in place during reverse shift rail removal to prevent loss of keys, springs and balls.

21. Remove reverse shift fork, then place support and assembly fixture tool No. J 37337-3 or equivalent over gearset and secure to tool No. J 37337-2 or equivalent.

22. Rotate fixture so input shaft is facing up.

23. Remove detent plug from front case using tool No. J 37107 or equivalent, then install guide tool No. J 38130 or equivalent to countershaft threads






24. Remove front case using tool Nos. J 38129 and J 38433 or equivalents, leaving tool No. J 37337-1 attached.

25. Remove countershaft snap ring and selective washer from front case, then countershaft input bearing from front case.

26. Remove input shaft main bearing using tool No. J 37339 or equivalent, then gearshift shaft ball sleeve using tool No. J 38127 or equivalent from front case.

27. Remove detent ball and locking pins from front case.
