Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair



CYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY

Tool Required

^ J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

Remove or Disconnect

1. Perform engine compression test.
2. Drain coolant.
3. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
4. Drain engine oil.
5. Lower vehicle.
6. Upper intake manifold assembly.
7. Lower intake manifold assembly.
8. Valve rocker arm and pushrod assemblies.
9. Exhaust crossover pipe assembly.
10. Engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket.
11. Oil level indicator tube assembly.
12. Spark plug wires from spark plugs.
13. Spark plugs.
14. Bolts/screws.
15. Head assembly and gasket.

Clean

^ Gasket surfaces on cylinder head assembly.
^ Cylinder block bolt/screw threads.
^ Cylinder head bolts/screws.

Inspect

^ For cylinder head assembly inspection procedure.

Install or Connect

1. New gasket.
2. Cylinder head assembly over locator pins and gasket.
3. Bolts/screws finger tight.

Tighten

^ Bolts/screws in sequence to 45 Nm (33 lb. ft.).
^ Turn bolts/screws in sequence an additional 90 degrees using J 36660.

4. Spark plugs.
5. Spark plug wires to spark plugs.
6. Oil level indicator tube assembly.
7. Engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket.
8. Exhaust crossover pipe assembly.
9. Valve rocker arm and pushrod assemblies.
10. Lower intake manifold assembly.
11. Upper intake manifold assembly.
12. Refill with engine oil.
13. Refill with engine coolant and add two engine coolant sealant pellets, GM P/N 3634621, or equivalent.
14. Bleed engine cooling system.
