1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

For Vehicles equipped with OnStar (UE1) with Back Up Battery:

The Back Up Battery is a redundant power supply to allow limited OnStar functionality in the event of a main vehicle battery power disruption to the VCIM (OnStar module). Do not disconnect the main vehicle battery or remove the OnStar fuse with the ignition key in any position other than OFF. Retained accessory power (RAP) should be allowed to time out or be disabled (simply opening the driver door should disable RAP) before disconnecting power. Disconnecting power to the OnStar module in any way while the ignition is On or with RAP activated may cause activation of the OnStar Back-Up Battery (BUB) system and will discharge and permanently damage the back-up battery. Once the Back-Up Battery is activated it will stay on until it has completely discharged. The BUB is not rechargeable and once activated the BUB must be replaced.

2. Remove the air cleaner duct.
3. Install the J 28467-90.
4. Install the J 28467-A.
5. Install the J 36462.
6. Remove the engine mount struts.
7. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.

12. Remove the fluid filler tube.

13. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3,4 and 5) and stud (2).
14. Remove the wiring harness grounds.
15. Raise and support the vehicle.

Caution: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off the hoist.

16. Remove the front tires and wheels.
17. Remove the engine splash shields.
18. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
19. Remove the power steering gear heat shield.
20. Remove the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts.

24. Remove the engine mount lower nuts.
25. Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles.
26. Remove the torque converter cover.
27. Remove the starter motor.

28. Remove the torque converter bolts.
29. Drain the transaxle fluid.
30. Remove the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle.
31. Remove the drive axles from the transaxle.
32. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
33. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors harness connectors.
34. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector.
35. Use the transaxle table to support the transaxle and frame.
36. Remove the transaxle brace.

37. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
38. Remove the frame to body bolts.
39. Lower the transaxle and frame from the vehicle.
40. Remove the transaxle from the frame to the bench.
41. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

1. J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
2. J 28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
3. J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
4. J 35944-A Oil Cooler and Line Flusher

1. Install the transaxle to the frame on the transaxle table.
2. Raise the transaxle and frame assembly to the vehicle.
3. Install the frame to body bolts.

4. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).

Tighten
Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

5. Install the transaxle brace.
6. Remove the transaxle table.
7. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector.
8. Connect the wheel speed sensors harness connectors.
9. Install the drive axles to the transaxle.
10. Install the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle.

11. Install the torque converter bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).

12. Install the starter motor.
13. Install the torque converter cover.
14. Install the lower ball joints to the knuckles.
