Spare Ignition Key Unavailable
TOOL REQUIRED:J 35628-A VATS/PASS Interrogator Tester
NOTE: The dealer vehicle invoice contains the resistor pellet and the "mechanical cut" key codes. If the dealer invoice is not available, follow this procedure to determine the resistor pellet code programmed on the vehicle. This procedure does not cover how to determine the "mechanical cut" key code.
1. Cut a new ignition key which has no resistor pellet. This test key will be used to operate the ignition switch for the remaining steps.
2. Remove the sound insulator panel under the LH side of the I/P.
3. Disconnect the two-cavity connector leading into the steering column.
Important
^ This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraints (SIR) system. Do not confuse the SIR 2-way (yellow) connector with the theft deterrent key resistor connector.
4. Close the LH front door.
5. Insert the male half of the connector into the female pigtail connector from the J 35628 interrogator.
6. Set the resistor pellet key code selector on the interrogator (J 35628 or equivalent) to 1.
7. Attempt to crank and start the engine using the key made in step 1.
^ If the engine cranks and starts, the resistor pellet key code selector matched the resistor pellet code programmed on the vehicle. Cut a new ignition key having this resistor pellet code. The new ignition key will be the customer's replacement ignition key.
^ If the engine does not crank:
A. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
B. Turn the resistor pellet key code selector on the J 35628 interrogator to the next higher position.
C. Wait four minutes and attempt to crank and start the engine using the new resistor pellet key code. Use the four-minute timer on the J 35628 interrogator to indicate the four-minute interval. Start the timer by depressing the start rocker switch. The red indicator will turn off at the end of a four-minute interval.
D. Repeat steps A, B and C until the engine starts.
E. Cut a new ignition key with the resistor pellet code that allowed the engine to start.
