New Product Information

The purpose of New Product Information is to highlight or indicate important product changes from the previous model year.
Changes may include one or more of the following items:
- Torque values and/or fastener tightening strategies
- Changed engine specifications
- New sealants and/or adhesives
- Disassembly and assembly procedure revisions
- Engine mechanical diagnostic procedure revisions
- New special tools required
- A component comparison from the previous year

Torque Values and/or Fastener Tightening Strategies
- The final torque value for the crankshaft balancer bolt has been increased to 140 degrees.
- A torque value has been added for the lower oil pan-to-upper oil pan retaining bolts.
- The torque value for the intake manifold (final pass) has been increased to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
- Certain fasteners should not be reused. Bolts, studs, or other fasteners that must be replaced will be called out in the specific service procedure.
- The torque value for the oil level sensor has been reduced to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.).

Changed Engine Specifications
- The cylinder bore taper specification has been increased.
- Machining dimensions for cylinder head height and engine block cylinder head deck height have been added to the table.

New Sealants and/or Adhesives
No sealant or adhesive changes from the previous year.

Disassembly and Assembly Procedure Revisions
- Water pump design changes do not permit removal and installation of the drive belt pulley.
- The ignition coils and bracket assembly must be removed prior to rocker arm cover removal.
The valve rocker arm covers are now retained to the cylinder heads by four center mounted bolts.
- The vapor vent pipe is now retained to the cylinder heads by two studs (located at the front of the engine) and two bolts.
The right front stud provides a mounting point for the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system.

Engine Mechanical Diagnostic Procedure Revisions
Base Engine Misfire, Valve Train, and other diagnostic information is now provided in table form. Potential or probable causes are supplied for each specific concern.

New Special Tools Required
- The proper thread repair procedures for aluminum cylinder blocks and cylinder heads have been added.
- Oil pressure testing tool J42907 has been developed to aid in oil pressure testing.

A Component Comparison from the Previous Year
- The water pump drive belt pulley is now pressed onto the pump shaft and is not serviceable separately.
- Aluminum carrier/silicone bead type gaskets now provide sealing between the water pump and the engine block surfaces. Do not substitute the earlier design paper gasket for the aluminum carrier type. Water pump pulley and accessory drive belt position will be affected.
- The valve rocker arm covers and cylinder head designs have changed. The rocker covers are retained to the cylinder heads by four center mounted rocker cover bolts.
- The ignition coils are no longer bolted directly to the valve rocker arm covers. The coils are mounted to a coil mounting bracket and the bracket is retained to the cover by bolts.
