Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Caution: To help avoid personal injury from unrepaired crash damage to a Restraint system:
^ Replace each seat belt system worn during a crash unless the crash was minor.
^ Perform the seat belt check for each seat belt system. Replace the seat belt system if there is any doubt about the condition of system components.


1. Sit in the drivers seat.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON and verify the proper operation of the seat belt reminder lamp with the belt buckled and unbuckled. 3. Inspect the shoulder belt guide in order to ensure the that the following conditions are met:
3.1. The shoulder belt guide swivels freely.
3.2. The seat belt webbing is seated flatly in the guide slot.
3.3. The webbing does not bind.
4. Check that the seat belt buckle faces inboard and is accessible.
5. Check that the seat belt retractor units are securely attached.
6. Check the seat belt anchor bolts to verify that the bolts are secure.
7. Fully extend the lap belt webbing and check that there are no twists or tears in the webbing.
8. Allow the lap belt webbing to retract and check that the webbing returns freely and completely back into the lower retractor.
9. Fully extend the shoulder belt webbing and check that there are no twists or tears in the webbing.
10. Allow the shoulder belt webbing to retract and check that the webbing returns freely and completely back into the upper retractor.
11. Check that the energy management loop, sewn into the shoulder belt webbing at the latch plate, is in tact and that the yellow, replace seat belt, label is not showing (energy management loop non-European belts only).
12. Snap the seat belt latch plate into the buckle.
13. Tug sharply on the seat belt latch plate and the buckle. Check that the buckle remains locked.
14. Push the button on the buckle.
14.1. Verify that the seat belt latch plate releases easily from the buckle.
14.2. Verify that the button returns to its original position.
15. Fully extend the lap belt webbing. Allow the webbing to partially rewind, tug sharply on the lap webbing, check that the lap webbing will not extend.
16. Repeat steps 3 to 15 for the front passenger seat.
