Differential Housing Cleaning and Inspection
Differential Carrier
1. Clean the differential carrier with solvent. Remove any sealant material from the case and covers.
2. Inspect the differential carrier for the following:
^ Damaged to threaded bolt holes
^ Broken flanges
^ Restrictions within the internal oil passages
^ Damaged case or cover sealing surfaces
^ Porosity
^ A damaged pinion cartridge O-ring seal surface
^ Damage to the O-ring seal grooves
^ Damaged lubricant fill plug or drain plug threads
Differential Carrier Covers
1. Clean the differential carrier covers with solvent.
2. Inspect the covers for the following:
^ Damage to the O-ring seal grooves
^ Damage to the output shaft axle seal bores
^ Porosity
^ Restrictions within the internal oil passages
^ A worn or damaged left side cover output shaft bearing bore
^ Dents or damage to the exterior of the pinion cover that may create an interference with the pinion shaft
^ Inspect the magnet for cracking or other damage
Differential Carrier Seal Plate (Automatic Transmission Applications)
1. Clean the carrier seal plate with solvent.
2. Inspect the seal plate for the following:
^ Cracks or other damage
^ A damaged oil seal bore
^ A damaged O-ring seal groove
Drive Pinion Cleaning and Inspection
1. Clean the drive pinion components with solvent.
2. Inspect the drive pinion components for the following:
^ Damage to the drive pinion locking nut (1) threads
^ Worn or scored bearings (2)
^ Damaged spacer (3)
^ The pinion housing (4) for damaged bolt hole threads, restrictions within the oil passages, or worn bearing race bores
^ Damaged drive pinion (5) threads or gears that are worn, chipped, or show unusual wear
