Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Related Tests and Procedures

To test operation of the theft deterrent system, an illegal entry can be simulated. Perform the theft deterrent test as follows:
1. Ensure hatch or trunk is closed and latched.
2. Close the hood (export only).
3. Sit in driver's seat with doors closed.
4. Turn ON the ignition switch.
5. Open a window with power window switch.
6. Turn OFF the park/headlamps.
7. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the ignition key.
8. Open door to exit vehicle; SECURITY lamp should be flashing.
9. Lock doors using power lock switch; SECURITY lamp should be ON continuously (not flashing).
10. Exit vehicle and close door; SECURITY lamp should go out in 2-3 seconds.
11. Reach through open window and unlock doors using either manual locks or power unlock switch.
12. Open door; alarm should activate.
13. Disarm theft deterrent alarm mode by either unlocking the driver or passenger door by using the door lock cylinder, turn the ignition ON with a valid PASS-Key(R), or press the unlock button on the remote door lock transmitter.

If the theft deterrent system does not operate as described above, check the operation of the following items using a scan tool:
^ Door ajar switches (BCM)
^ Door key switches (DCMS)
^ Remote door lock transmitter (RFA)
^ Power door lock/unlock switches (DCMs)

If the above items check OK, cycle the horn and/or lights (fog, backup, turn signals) output through the BCM output control functions, or the SECURITY indicator through the IPC output control functions using a scan tool. These systems must be diagnosed first before diagnosing the theft deterrent system.
