Steering Column Bracket Replacement

Removal Procedure




1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the console.
4. Remove the IP accessory trim plate.
5. Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel.
6. Remove the ignition switch housing bracket and reposition the ignition switch.
7. Release the ignition switch and hazard warning switch wiring harness retainers from the driver knee bolster bracket.

Important: The following step must be performed to assure proper trim fits during installation.

8. Mark the location of the driver knee bolster bracket. Refer to Instrument Panel Disassembly Precautions.
9. Remove the driver knee bolster bracket retaining screws.
10. Remove the driver knee bolster bracket.




11. Remove the LH lower closeout panel.
12. Tilt the steering wheel to the lowest position.
13. Remove the steering column upper and lower nuts retaining the steering column to the steering column bracket, then carefully rest the steering column on the IP lower support beam.
14. Remove the LH windshield side garnish molding.
15. Remove the IP upper trim pad.
16. Remove the LH side window defogger outlet duct. Replacement - Side Window, LH in HVAC - Automatic.
17. Remove the instrument panel cluster.
18. Disconnect the Bose(R) module electrical/audio connector, if equipped.






Important: The Bose(R) module is only held in place by retaining bolts. Be sure to support the module upon removal.

19. Remove the bolts mounting the Bose(R) module to the steering column bracket, if equipped.
20. Remove the Bose(R) module, if equipped.

Important: The following step must be performed to assure proper trim fits during installation.

21. Mark the location of the driver knee bolster outer bracket. Refer to Instrument Panel Disassembly Precautions.




22. Remove the driver knee bolster outer bracket retaining screws.
23. Remove the driver knee bolster outer bracket.




24. Remove the accelerator pedal assembly (with accelerator pedal position sensor).
25. Disconnect the brake master cylinder push rod from the brake pedal.
26. Remove the brake booster mounting nuts.




27. Remove the cruise control release switch bracket mounting bolts (M/T).
28. Reposition the cruise control release switch and bracket (M/T).




29. Disconnect the clutch master cylinder push rod from the clutch pedal (M/T).




30. Remove the nuts mounting the clutch pedal bracket to the steering column bracket (M/T).
31. Remove the clutch pedal bracket stud plate (M/T).






Important: The following step must be performed to assure proper trim fits during installation.

32. Mark the location of the steering column bracket. Refer to Instrument Panel Disassembly Precautions.
33. Remove the bolts mounting the steering column bracket to the IP lower support beam.




34. Remove the bolts mounting the steering column bracket to the IP upper support beam.
35. Remove the steering column bracket.

Installation Procedure




1. Install the steering column bracket into position as marked prior to removal.
2. Install the steering column bracket to IP upper support beam bolts.






Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the steering column bracket to IP lower support beam bolts.

Tighten the steering column bracket mounting bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).




4. Install the clutch pedal bracket stud plate (M/T).
5. Install the clutch pedal bracket stud plate nuts (M/T).

Tighten the clutch pedal bracket mounting nuts to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).




6. Connect the clutch master cylinder push rod to the clutch pedal (M/T).




7. Position the cruise control release switch and bracket to the steering column bracket.
8. Install the cruise control release switch bracket bolts.

Tighten the cruise control release switch bracket bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).




9. Install the brake booster nuts.

Tighten the brake booster nuts to 29 N.m (21 lb ft).

10. Connect the brake master cylinder push rod to the brake pedal.
11. Install the accelerator pedal assembly (with accelerator pedal position sensor).




12. Install the driver knee bolster outer bracket into position as marked prior to removal.
13. Install the driver knee bolster outer bracket retaining screws.

Tighten the driver knee bolster outer bracket retaining screws to 1.9 N.m (17 lb in).




14. Position the Bose(R) module, if equipped, to the steering column bracket.
15. Install the Bose(R) module retaining bolts, if equipped.

Tighten the Bose(R) module retaining bolts to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).




16. Connect the Bose(R) module electrical/audio connector, if equipped.
17. Install the instrument panel cluster.
18. Install the LH side window defogger outlet duct.
19. Install the IP upper trim pad.
20. Install the LH windshield side garnish molding.
21. Install the steering column to the steering column bracket.




22. Install the driver knee bolster bracket into position as marked prior to removal.
23. Install the screws which retain the driver knee bolster bracket to the steering column bracket.

Tighten the driver knee bolster bracket retaining screws to 1.9 N.m (17 lb in).

24. Secure the ignition switch and hazard warning switch wiring harness retainers to the driver knee bolster bracket.
25. Install the ignition switch housing bracket.
26. Install the driver knee bolster trim panel.
27. Install the IP accessory trim plate.
28. Install the console.
29. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).

30. Program the transmitters. Refer to Transmitter Programming/Synchronization in Keyless Entry.
31. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
