Drive Pinion Assemble

- J 42163 Spanner Wrench
- J 42164 Pinion Gear Holder
- J 42160 Pinion Bearing Installer
- J 42172 Bearing Race Installer
- J 42170 Bearing Race Installer

Important: The drive pinion bearings and spacer must be replaced as a set.

The pinion bearing spacer is specific for the bearing set and must be used in order to achieve the proper bearing preload.





1. Install the front drive pinion bearing inner race into the drive pinion housing using the J 42172 and a hydraulic press.





2. Install the rear drive pinion bearing outer race into the drive pinion housing using the J 42170 and a hydraulic press.

Important: Be sure to use J 42164 when pressing the bearing onto the pinion.





3. Install the front drive pinion bearing (large) onto the drive pinion using the J 42160, the J 42164, and a hydraulic press.





4. Assemble the drive pinion (5), housing (4), spacer (3), and bearing (2).





5. Install the rear drive pinion bearing onto the drive pinion using the J 42160, the J 42164, and a hydraulic press.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





6. Install the drive pinion nut onto the drive pinion using a torque wrench, the J 42163 and the J 42164.
Tighten the drive pinion nut to 530 Nm (392 ft. lbs.).
7. Using a punch, stake the areas of the drive pinion nut into the two notches in the end of the drive pinion.
