Rear Axle - Disassemble

- J 42155 Differential Case Lifting Tool
- J 25070 Heat Gun

Important: When separating the differential carrier from the automatic transmission, the carrier seal plate may remain in the front of the differential carrier housing.

Seal plate removal may be required.
During assembly of the components, install a new O-ring seal and transmission output shaft oil seal onto the carrier seal plate.





1. Separate the transmission from the drive axle (if required).





2. Remove the differential carrier seal plate (automatic transmission applications) from the front of the differential carder housing (if required).
Remove the differential carrier seal plate oil seal and O-ring seal.
3. Discard the oil seals.





4. Remove the differential carrier mount and bolts (if required).





5. Remove the axle lubricant drain -plug and drain the lubricant.





6. Remove the axle lubricant fill plug (3), lubricant fill tag (2), and washer (1).





7. Remove the vehicle speed sensor bolt and the vehicle speed sensor.





8. Remove the right side differential carder cover bolts, right cover, and O-ring seal.
9. Discard the O-ring seal.
10. Remove the right side differential carrier cover axle seal.
11. Discard the axle seal.





12. Install two M10 x 1.5 nuts onto the right side transmission mounting stud and remove the stud from the block.
13. Remove the right side transmission stud mount bolts and stud mount from the differential carrier.





14. Remove the C-clip (1) from the right output shaft.





15. Remove the differential case assembly from the differential carrier using the J 42155.





16. Remove the rear differential carrier cover bolts, rear cover, and O-ring seal.
17. Discard the O-ring seal.





18. Remove the pinion cartridge bolts.





19. Heat the differential carrier around the pinion cartridge using the J 25070.





20. Install two M10 x 1.5 bolts (1) into the flange of the pinion cartridge.
Using the bolts as a handle, remove the pinion cartridge from the differential carrier.





21. Remove the pinion cartridge from the differential carrier.
22. Remove the pinion cartridge shim pack from the differential carrier.
23. Tag the shim pack to indicate the position from which it was removed.





24. Remove the left side differential carrier cover bolts, left cover, and O-ring seal.
25. Discard the O-ring seal.
26. Remove the left side differential carrier cover axle seal.
27. Discard the axle seal.
