Ring Gear and Differential Housing Assemble
^ Tools Required- J 42162 Side Gear Compressor
- J 42160 Bearing Installer
- J 42173 Ring Gear Holder
1. Install the right clutch pack into the right differential case.
Install the friction separator plates (4) and friction plates (3) alternately.
2. Install the thick friction plate (2) with the friction material facing the separator plate.
3. Install the bellville washer (1) with the domed or raised end facing away from the friction plate (2).
4. Install the right output shaft and gear (3), side gears (1), and washers (2) into the right differential case.
5. Install the side gear pin into the right differential case using the J 42162 and a hydraulic press.
6. Properly position the side gear pin into the differential case.
The hole in the pin (2) must align with the hole in the differential case.
During final assembly of the differential case, the pin retaining bolt (1) must be able to pass through the hole in the pin.
7. Install the left output shaft into the left side gear.
8. Install the C-clip onto the left output shaft.
9. Install the left differential case side bearing using the J 42160.
10. Install the left clutch pack into the left differential case.
Install the friction separator plates (1) and friction plates (2) alternately.
11. Install the thick friction plate (3) with the friction material facing the separator plate.
12. Install the bellville washer (4) with the domed or raised end facing away from the friction plate (3).
13. Install the left output shaft and gear into the left differential case.
14. Install the left differential case to the right differential case.
15. Install the differential case bolts.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
16. Install the differential case assembly into the J 42173.
Tighten the differential case bolts to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
17. Install the right differential case side bearing using the J 42160.
18. Install the ring gear onto the differential case.
Use several bolts to properly align the ring gear to the differential case during installation.
A hammer and brass punch may be used to aid in seating the ring gear onto the differential case.
19. Use the J 42173 in order to support the differential case and install the ring gear bolts.
Tighten the ring gear bolts to 195 Nm (144 ft. lbs.).
