Engine ID and VIN Derivative Location
The eighth character in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) identifies the engine. Adhesive-backed labels attached to the engine, laser etching or stampings on the engine block indicate the engine unit number/date code. All engines are stamped with a VIN derivative. 3800 VIN K Engine:
The primary location (1) of the VIN derivative for the 3800 L36 engine is on the engine block above the starter motor.
The secondary location (1) of the VIN derivative for the 3800 L36 engine is on the engine block below the water pump.
The primary location (1) of the Engine ID for the 3800 L36 engine is under exhaust manifold close to where the bellhousing bolts to the block.
3400 VIN E Engine
The primary (1) and optional (2) location of the VIN derivative for the 3400 LA1 engine is on the lower left front transaxle mounting surface.
The primary location (1) of the Engine ID for the 3400 LA1 engine is on the top front of the engine block.
The optional (2) location is on lower left front transaxle mounting surface.
