Removal and Replacement
Removal ProcedureNotice: Refer to Engine Emission Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Releave fuel pressure from fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure in Computers and Controls.
2. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
3. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Frame.
4. Remove the cross vehicle brace. Refer to Brace Replacement - Cross Vehicle in Body and Frame.
5. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct and the mass air flow sensor from the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Computers and Controls.
6. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) or Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right).
7. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement
8. Disconnect the brake booster hose from the upper intake manifold.
9. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
- The heated oxygen sensor (H02S1)
- The AIR check valve solenoid (if equipped)
- The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
- The Evaporative Emissions Canister Purge Solenoid valve
- The Throttle Position (TP) sensor
- The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
- The generator
- The ignition coil
- The wiring harness grounds
- The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
11. Remove the lower radiator air baffle. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Upper) or Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Side) or Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Lower) in Cooling System.
12. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine (Right) or Splash Shield Replacement - Engine (Left) in Body and Frame.
13. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
14. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
15. Remove the oil filter.
16. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
- The vehicle speed sensor
- The oil level sensor
- The oil pressure switch
- The engine block heater (if equipped)
- The knock sensor
- The heated oxygen sensor (H02S2)
- The crankshaft position sensor (24X)
- The A/C compressor
- The wiring harness grounds
17. Disconnect the three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right exhaust manifold.
18. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount and Bracket Replacement.
19. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
20. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
21. Remove the A/C compressor bolts. Reposition and secure the A/C compressor.
22. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts in Transmission and Drivetrain.
23. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
24. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
25. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
26. Lower the vehicle.
Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
27. Disconnect the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable from the throttle body and the cable bracket. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Computers and Controls and Cruise Control Cable Replacement or Cruise Control Cable Replacement in Cruise Control.
28. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold and the EVAP line.
29. Disconnect the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Filter to Engine) in Computers and Controls.
30. Disconnect the AIR system (if equipped). Refer to Secondary AIR Injection Pump Replacement and AIR Check Valve/Pipe Replacement - Bank 2 in Computers and Controls.
31. Remove the power steering pump and reposition. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
32. Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
33. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet in Cooling System.
34. Suitably support the transaxle with floor stands.
35. Attach the engine lifting device.
36. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
37. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
38. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Removal.
39. Secure the engine to a suitable engine stand.
40. Remove the generator and the generator bracket.
41. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
42. Remove the ignition control module.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Engine Emission Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Install the ignition control module.
2. Install the drive belt tensioner.
3. Install the generator bracket and the generator.
4. Remove the engine from stand.
5. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Installation.
6. Install the engine to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
7. Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove the engine lifting device.
9. Remove the floor stands from the transaxle.
10. Install the radiator inlet hose to the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet in Cooling System.
11. Connect the heater outlet and inlet hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
12. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
13. Connect the AIR system if equipped. Refer to AIR Check Valve/Pipe Replacement - Bank 2 and Secondary AIR Injection Pump Replacement in Computers and Controls.
14. Connect the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Filter to Engine) in Computers and Controls.
15. Connect the power brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement in Brakes and Traction Control.
16. Connect the vacuum hoses to the upper intake manifold.
Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
17. Connect the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable to the cable bracket and the throttle body. Refer to Cruise Control Cable Replacement or Cruise Control Cable Replacement in Cruise Control and Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Computers and Controls.
18. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
19. Install the radiator outlet hose to the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
20. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
21. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
22. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts in Transmission and Drivetrain.
23. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
24. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
25. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
26. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount and Bracket Replacement.
27. Install the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Powertrain Management.
28. Install the oil filter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter Installation.
29. Connect the electrical harness connectors to the following:
- The vehicle speed sensor
- The oil level sensor
- The oil pressure switch
- The engine block heater (if equipped)
- The knock sensor
- The heated oxygen sensor (H02S2)
- The crankshaft position sensor (24X)
- The A/C compressor
- The wiring harness grounds
30. Install the lower radiator air baffle. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Upper) or Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Side) or Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Lower) in Cooling System.
31. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine (Right) or Splash Shield Replacement - Engine (Left) in Body and Frame.
32. Lower the vehicle.
33. Fill the engine with new engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
34. Fill with cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
35. Connect the electrical harness connectors to the following:
- The heated oxygen sensor (H02S1)
- The AIR check valve solenoid (if equipped)
- The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
- The Evaporative Emissions Canister Purge Solenoid valve
- The Throttle Position (TP) sensor
- The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
- The generator
- The ignition coil
- The wiring harness grounds
- The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
36. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
37. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right).
38. Install the throttle body air inlet duct and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Computers and Controls.
39. Install the cross vehicle brace. Refer to Brace Replacement - Cross Vehicle in Body and Frame.
40. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Frame.
41. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
42. Perform a CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure in Computers and Controls. Programming and Relearning
