5. Direct Clutch Overhaul
Disassembly Procedure- Tools Required
- J 23327 Clutch Spring Compressor
1. Remove the snap ring from the clutch drum.
2. Remove the following components:
- The flange
- The discs
- The plates
3. Use the J 23327 in order to compress the piston return springs.
4. Use a screwdriver in order to remove the snap ring.
5. Remove the following components:
- The spring retainer
- The 18 springs (1)
6. Slide the direct clutch (2) onto the oil pump.
7. Apply compressed air to the oil pump in order to remove the piston. If the piston does not come out completely with the compressed air, use needle-nose pliers in order to remove the piston.
8. Remove the direct clutch from the oil pump.
9. Remove the clutch piston O-ring.
10. Use the following procedure in order to inspect the clutch piston:
- Verify that the check ball is free by shaking the piston.
- Verify that the valve does not leak by applying low-pressure compressed air.
11. Inspect the discs.
Assembly Procedure
- Tools Required
- J 23327-1 Clutch Spring Compressor
- J 8001 Dial Indicator
- J 26900-13 Magnetic Indicator Base
- J 36850 Transjel(TM)
1. Coat new O-rings with J 36850 or equivalent.
2. Install the new O-rings on the piston.
3. Press the piston into the drum so that the cup side of the piston faces up.
Do NOT damage the O-ring.
4. Assemble the 18 piston return springs (1).
5. Install the following components into place:
- The retainer
- The snap ring
6. Use the J 23327-1 in order to compress the piston return springs.
7. Use the following procedure in order to install the plates, the discs and the flange:
7.1. Install the following components in the following order:
7.1.1. The plate
7.1.2. The disc
7.1.3. Another plate
7.1.4. Another plate
7.1.5. Another disc
7.2. Install the flange.
The flat end of the flange must face downward.
Important: Use a screw driver in order to install the snap ring.
Do NOT align the end gap of the snap ring with the spring retainer claw.
8. Install the outer snap ring. Do NOT align the end gap of the snap ring with any of the cutouts.
9. Use the J 8001, J 26900-13, and compressed air in order to measure the stroke of the direct clutch.
- The stroke should measure between 1.11-1.47 mm (0.0437-0.0579 inch).
- If the stroke does not measure within the specified range, select a proper flange.
- There are two different flange thicknesses:
- 3.00 mm (0.1181 inch)
- 3.37 mm (0.1327 inch)
10. Install the direct clutch onto the oil pump.
11. Using J 8001 and J 26900-13, apply compressed air into the passage of the oil pump body.
12. Verify that the piston moves properly.
13. If the piston does not move, disassemble and inspect the piston.
