Ring Gear and Differential Housing Assemble
Ring Gear and Differential Housing Assemble^ Tools Required
- J 42162 Side Gear Compressor
- J 42170 Bearing and Race Installer
- J 42173 Differential Holding Fixture
Important: Friction discs and separator plates develop specific wear patterns. During disc and plate installation, the components must be installed in the specific order in which they were removed.
1. Install the clutch pack - right to the case - right.
^ Install the separator plates (4).
^ Install the friction discs (3).
^ Install the friction disc (thick) (2).
^ Install the belleville washer (1).
2. Install the output shaft and gear - right (3), side gears (1), and washers (2) to the differential case- right.
3. Using the J42162 and a hydraulic press, compress the bellville washer and clutch pack in order to install the cross pin to the differential case- right.
4. Using an M8 bolt for alignment, properly position the cross pin into the differential case - right. The hole in the pin (2) must align with the hole in the case. During final assembly of the case halves, the pin retaining bolt (1) must be able to pass through the hole in the cross pin.
5. With the pin and case aligned, release the pressure from the press and remove the J 42162 and bolt.
6. Install the gear to the output shaft - left.
7. Install the C-clip to the output shaft - left.
8. Install the side bearing - left to the differential using J 42170 and a hydraulic press.
Important: Friction discs and separator plates develop specific wear patterns. During disc and plate installation, the components must be installed in the specific order in which they were removed.
9. Install the clutch pack - left to the case - left.
^ Install the separator plates (1).
^ Install the friction discs (2).
^ Install the friction disc (thick) (3).
^ Install the beliville washer (4).
10. Install the output shaft and gear - left to the case - left.
11. Assemble the case halves.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
12. Install the case bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
13. Install the side bearing - right to the differential using the J 42170 and a hydraulic press.
14. Install the ring gear (1) to the differential. Use several bolts to properly align the ring gear to the case.
A hammer and brass punch may be used to aid in seating the ring gear onto the differential case.
15. Install the NEW ring gear bolts (2).
16. Position the differential assembly onto the J 42173.
^ Tighten the ring gear bolts to 195 Nm (144 ft. lbs.).
