Evaporative Emissions System: Service and Repair
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM CLEANINGTOOLS REQUIRED
J 41413 EVAP Purge and Pressure Diagnostic Station
J 41415-40 Fuel Tank Gas Cap Adapter
J 41416 Ultrasonic Leak Detector
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
If diagnosis does not lead to a conclusion or leads to replacement of the EVAP canister purge valve, proceed with the following inspection.
NOTE: Use the EVAP Pressure/Purge Diagnostic Station J 41413 in order to provide a clean, dry, low pressure gas source. Do not substitute any other pressurized gas source. Damage may result to the EVAP system.
1. Turn OFF the ignition.
2. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve from the vehicle.
3. Lightly tap the EVAP canister purge valve on a hard surface.
4. Inspect for carbon particles that exit from either of the vacuum ports.
5. If carbon particle release is not observed, reinstall the solenoid.
6. Release of carbon particles indicates that the EVAP canister is faulty and that you must clear the purge lines.
7. Remove the EVAP canister from the vehicle.
8. Turn OFF the main valve (1) of the nitrogen cylinder (3) on the J 41413.
9. Disconnect the black hose (4) that connects to the pressure regulator valve (5) of the nitrogen cylinder (3) on the EVAP diagnostic station.
10. Using a section of the vacuum hose, connect one end onto the open fitting of the pressure regulator valve (5).
11. Connect the other end of the vacuum hose to the EVAP purge line on the vehicle.
12. Turn ON the main valve (1) of the nitrogen cylinder (3) in order to blow out any charcoal particles and any foreign material.
13. Continue to blow any debris from the purge line for 15 seconds.
14. Remove the vacuum hose from the vehicle purge line.
15. Return the EVAP purge and pressure diagnostic station to the original configuration.
16. Install the EVAP canister purge valve.
17. Install a new EVAP canister.
18. Connect the EVAP purge and pressure diagnostic station to the vehicle using the J 41415-40.
19. Test the EVAP system for leaks using the J41416.
20. Repair any leaks as necessary.
