Instrument Panel (I/P) Trim Panel Replacement - Lower (Monte Carlo)
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Restraint System Service Precautions in Service Precautions.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in Restraint Systems.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Release the left instrument panel (I/P) insulator tabs from the lower I/P trim pad.
4. Rotate the courtesy lamp counterclockwise in order to disconnect the courtesy lamp from the left I/P insulator.
5. Remove the left I/P insulator from the stud at the accelerator pedal.
6. Remove the left I/P insulator.
7. Remove the steering column filler panel.
8. Remove the knee bolster bracket screws.
9. Remove the knee bolster bolts at the I/P lower trim panel.
10. Remove the knee bolster bolts at the instrument carrier.
11. Remove the steering column.
12. Remove the I/P cluster trim plate screws.
13. Starting at the right I/P cluster trip plate, grasp the trim plate and carefully pull rearward.
14. Continue working around the I/P cluster trim plate until you have released all of the retainers from the I/P lower trim panel.
15. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the hazard switch.
16. Remove the I/P cluster trim plate.
17. Remove the ignition cylinder bolts. Reposition the ignition cylinder.
18. Remove the radio.
19. Remove the HVAC control assembly.
20. Disconnect the floor console storage bin lamp, if equipped.
21. Remove the headlamp switch. Disconnect the headlamp switch electrical connector.
22. Disconnect the hood latch release handle. Push the hood release handle through the opening in the I/P.
23. Remove the data link connector screws and disconnect the data link connector.
24. Remove the I/P cluster.
25. Remove the garnish moldings from the left and the right windshield pillar.
26. Disconnect and reposition the left fuse block wiring harness.
27. Starting at the right side, carefully lift upwards on the I/P upper trim panel in order to release the retainers. Continue working to your left until you have released all of the retainers.
28. Disconnect the daytime running lamps sensor from the I/P upper trim panel.
29. Remove the I/P upper trim panel.
30. Remove the I/P compartment.
31. Remove the right upper I/P trim plate.
32. Remove the right lower I/P trim plate.
33. Remove the I/P upper trim pad screws.
34. Reach under the I/P upper trip pad and release the retainers from the remote keyless entry (RKE) module.
35. Disconnect the electrical connector.
36. Remove the RKE module.
37. Disengage the I/P insulator retainers near the windshield from the I/P upper trim pad.
Remove the I/P upper trim pad.
38. Disconnect the electrical connector from the inflatable restraint I/P module.
39. Remove the inflatable restraint I/P module.
40. Remove the right I/P insulator.
41. Disconnect and reposition the right I/P fuse block wiring harness.
42. Remove the small I/P lower trim panel screws.
43. Remove the large I/P lower trim panel screws.
44. Reposition the I/P wiring harness.
45. Remove the I/P lower trim panel from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the I/P lower trim panel to the vehicle.
2. Position the I/P wiring harness to the original location on the I/P assembly.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the large I/P lower trim panel screws in the order shown in the graphic.
Tighten the screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
4. Install the small I/P lower trim panel screws.
Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
5. Connect the right I/P fuse block wiring harness.
6. Install the right I/P insulator.
7. Install the inflatable restraint I/P module. Connect the electrical connector to the inflatable restraint I/P module.
8. Position the I/P upper trim pad to the upper I/P.
Install the I/P insulator retainers to the I/P upper trim pad.
9. Reach under the I/P upper trim pad and position the RKE wiring harness through the I/P upper trim pad opening. Install the RKE module. Connect the electrical connector to the RKE module.
10. Install the I/P upper trim pad screws.
* Tighten the horizontal I/P upper trim pad screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
* Tighten the vertical I/P upper trim pad screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
11. Install the right lower I/P trim plate.
12. Install the right upper I/P trim plate.
13. Install the I/P compartment.
14. Position the I/P upper trim panel to the vehicle. Connect the daytime running lamps (DRL) sensor to the I/P upper trim panel.
Important: Do NOT pinch the DRL sensor wiring harness when you install the I/P upper trim panel.
15. Starting at the left side, install the trim panel retainers into the upper I/P. Continue working to your right until you have installed all of the retainers.
16. Connect the left fuse block wiring harness.
17. Install the garnish moldings to the right and to the left windshield pillar.
18. Install the I/P cluster.
19. Install the data link connector.
Tighten the data link connector screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
20. Push the hood release handle through the opening in the I/P. Connect the hood latch release handle. Refer to Hood Latch Release Handle Replacement in Body Front End.
21. Connect the headlamp switch electrical connector. Install the headlamp switch.
22. Connect the floor console storage bin lamp, if equipped.
23. Install the HVAC control module.
24. Install the radio.
25. Install the ignition switch to the I/P.
26. Install the ignition switch bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
27. Position the I/P cluster trim plate to the I/P lower trim panel.
28. Connect the electrical connector to the hazard switch.
29. Carefully press the I/P cluster trim plate into the I/P lower trim panel. Fully engage all of the retainers.
30. Install the I/P cluster trim plate screws.
Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
31. Install the steering column.
32. Align the knee bolster bracket to the I/P. Install the knee bolster bracket bolts at the I/P carrier in the sequence shown.
Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
33. Install the bolts that secure the driver I/P knee bolster to the I/P lower trim panel.
Tighten the bolts to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
34. Install the knee bolster bracket screws.
Tighten the screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
35. Install the steering column filler panel.
36. Position the left I/P insulator to the vehicle. Install the left I/P insulator to the stud at the accelerator pedal.
37. Rotate the courtesy lamp clockwise in order to connect the courtesy lamp to the left I/P insulator.
38. Install the left I/P insulator tabs to the lower I/P trim pad.
39. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in Restraint Systems.
40. Connect the battery ground cable.
