Transmission Sport Mode Switch Circuit

Circuit/System Description

The sport shift mode enables the operator of the vehicle selections of 2 different shift patterns. Power mode programming in the transmission control module (TCM) will increase transmission line pressure and extends the transmission shift points. In the economy mode, the TCM uses standard programming, permitting normal line pressure and shifting. The body control module (BCM) supplies 12 volts to the sport mode switch. When the sport mode switch is depressed, it momentarily connects the switch signal circuit to ground. This voltage drop across the switch signals the BCM to signal the TCM via the serial data circuit to change modes. Cycling the sport mode switch returns the transmission to the previous normal shift pattern.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* No Transmission Mode Switch Signal DTC P1762.

* The engine speed is greater than 400 RPM for 5 seconds.

* The system voltage is greater than 8.6 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The sport mode switch remains closed, low voltage, for 600 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P071D is a Type C DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P071D is a Type C DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

If the electrical circuit tests are OK and the shift pattern is not occurring, there may be a mechanical/hydraulic condition that prevents operation. Refer to Symptoms - Automatic Transmission Symptoms - Automatic Transmission.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, cycle the sport mode switch while observing the sport mode switch parameter on the scan tool in the Transmission Controls Data list. The sport mode switch parameter should change states from NO to YES, or YES to NO with each cycle of the switch.

If the parameter does not change states

Refer to Circuit/System testing below.

If the parameter does change states

2. After performing the above steps, verify that the DTC does not reset by operating the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions you observe from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data. If the vehicle passes the Circuit/System Verification procedure, then STOP. Do not perform the Circuit/System Testing or Component Testing as this may result in an unnecessary part replacement. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections.

Circuit/System Testing

Note:
You must perform the Circuit/System Verification first.

1. Ignition OFF, transmission in Park. Disconnect the sport mode wire harness electrical connector.

2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between terminal 1 on the sport mode vehicle wire harness connector and ground at the battery negative post.

If greater than the specified value

Test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

If less than the specified value

3. Ignition ON, test for greater than 11 volts on the signal circuit terminal 2 on the sport mode vehicle wire harness connector and ground at the battery negative post.

If not within the specified value

Test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If all circuits test normal, replace the BCM.

If within the specified value

4. Ignition OFF, test for less than 3 ohms between terminal 1 and terminal 3 on the sport mode component connector terminals while depressing the sport mode switch button.

If greater than the specified value

Replace the sport mode switch assembly.

If less than the specified value

5. If all circuits test normal, replace the BCM.

Repair Instructions
