Engine Control Module: Service and Repair
Engine Control Module Replacement
Pre-Removal Procedure
Note:
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced with a NEW ECM, the NEW ECM must be updated with the remaining service data retrieved from the OLD ECM.
1. Use a scan tool and retrieve the remaining service data.
2. Record the remaining service data.
If the ECM is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:
Note:
The ECM must be reset prior to the removal from the vehicle. Failing to reset the ECM will result in the following:
* Inability to test the ECM for warranty purposes.
* Inability to use the ECM in other vehicles.
1. Perform the ECM reset procedure. Refer to Engine Control Module Programming and Setup Testing and Inspection.
2. Perform the theft deterrent programming. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup Testing and Inspection.
Removal Procedure
1. Ignition OFF.
Warning:
Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning Battery Disconnect Warning.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
Note:
Do not damage the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2).
3. Unlock all the engine wiring harness electrical connector retainers (4) on the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2).
4. Unlock all the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2) by lifting the engine wiring harness electrical connector levers (3).
5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2) from the ECM (1).
Note:
Do not damage the ECM bracket retainers (2).
6. Apply suitable pressure to the ECM bracket retainers (2) and remove the ECM (3) from the ECM bracket (1).
Installation Procedure
Note:
* Do not damage the ECM bracket retainers (2).
* Listen for an audible click to confirm correct installation of the ECM bracket retainers (2).
1. Install the ECM (3) to the ECM bracket (1).
Note:
Do not damage the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2).
2. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2) to the ECM (1).
3. Lock all the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2) to the ECM (1) by lowering the engine wiring harness electrical connector levers (3).
Note:
Listen for an audible click to confirm correct installation of engine wiring harness electrical connector retainers (4).
4. Lock all the engine wiring harness electrical connector retainers (4) on the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2).
5. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
Note:
Update the service data of the NEW ECM with the recorded data if necessary.
6. Program the ECM. Refer to Engine Control Module Programming and Setup Testing and Inspection.
7. If an ECM programming error is encountered such as "Starting Disabled, Remove Key" on the driver information centre, with a diagnostic test code (DTC) P1631, perform the "10-Minute relearn procedure" found in programming theft deterrent control module programming and setup. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup Testing and Inspection.
8. Turn OFF the ignition for at least 5 seconds after the ECM programming is complete.
9. Use the scan tool to clear all DTCs.
