Engine Control Module: Testing and Inspection
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Replacement
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:
Note: When replacing the ECM, the ECM must be reset prior to removal. Failure to perform this procedure will result in the inability to:
* Test the ECM for warranty purposes.
* Install the ECM into other vehicles.
1. ECM reset procedure.
2. ECM reprogramming-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) Service Programming System (SPS).
3. The Throttle Learn procedure-Refer to Throttle/Idle Learn Testing and Inspection.
4. Brake Pedal Position Sensor Learn-Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Learn .
5. The Crankshaft Position Variation Learn-Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Testing and Inspection.
6. The Theft Deterrent Programming-Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup Testing and Inspection.
ECM Reprogramming
* If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) Service Programming System (SPS).
* Engine Oil Life Remaining - When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
If any of the following components are replaced, a Crankshaft Position Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Testing and Inspection.
* Engine replacement
* Any engine repair that disturbs the crankshaft position sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel.
* Crankshaft position sensor
If the throttle body is replaced or a throttle body cleaning procedure is completed, the Throttle/Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Throttle/Idle Learn Testing and Inspection.
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification Verification Tests after completing the proceeding procedures.
