Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Replacement
Removal Procedure
Warning:
Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning Battery Disconnect Warning.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
Danger:
To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
3. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement (V6) Service and RepairExhaust System Replacement (V8) Service and Repair.
4. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60) Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60).
5. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (L77) Service and RepairStarter Replacement (LFX) Service and Repair.
6. Remove the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement Transmission Replacement
Note:
If the ring gear teeth are damaged, inspect the starter for correct operation. Replace the starter motor if you find wear or damage to the starter drive above acceptable tolerances.
7. Remove the automatic transmission flex plate. Refer to Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Removal 4. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Removal.
Installation Procedure
Note:
The following step applies if the original automatic transmission flex plate is being installed.
1. Clean and Inspect the automatic transmission flex plate. Refer to Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Cleaning and Inspection 37. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Cleaning and Inspection.
2. Install the automatic transmission flex plate. Refer to Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Installation 98. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Installation.
3. Install the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement Transmission Replacement :
4. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (L77) Service and RepairStarter Replacement (LFX) Service and Repair.
5. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60) Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60).
6. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement (V6) Service and RepairExhaust System Replacement (V8) Service and Repair.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
