- Passenger Presence Sensor Circuit Out of Range

Circuit/System Description

The Passenger Presence Module is used to monitor the weight of an occupant on the front passenger seat and communicate the status to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module whether to enable or suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag. The Passenger Presence Module consist of an electronic control module, silicone filled sensor pad, passenger presence sensor, passenger seat belt tension sensor, wiring harness, and PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators. The silicone filled sensor pad is located under the passenger seat foam cushion and is connected by a hose clamped to the passenger presence sensor. The weight of the occupant sitting in the front passenger seat is measured as a pressure change within the bladder by the passenger presence sensor. The passenger presence sensor sends a voltage signal to the Passenger Presence Module. If the pressure from the occupant's weight is less than a specified value, the Passenger Presence Module will send a suppress signal to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module to disable the passenger instrument panel air bag. If the pressure from the occupant's weight is higher than a specified value, the Passenger Presence Module will send an enable signal to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module to enable the passenger instrument panel air bag. The Passenger Presence Module will notify the customer of the enable/disable status by illuminating one of the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators located on the instrument panel. The Passenger Presence Module monitors itself for faults and will set flash DTC if a fault is detected. The Passenger Presence Module will also notify the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module of a fault. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will respond by setting DTC B0092 and requesting the Instrument Cluster to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

* The Passenger Presence Module detects the voltage at passenger presence sensor signal is less than 0.05 volt or greater than 4.5 volts for 500 milliseconds.

* The Passenger Presence Module detects the voltage at passenger presence sensor 5-volt reference is less than 4.5 volts or greater than 9.1 volts for 500 milliseconds.

* The Passenger Presence Module detects the amperage at passenger presence sensor low reference is 25 mA or greater for 500 milliseconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module disables the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop.

* The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module requests the Instrument Cluster to illuminate the SIR system AIR BAG indicator.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.

* The scan tool CLEAR DTC command has been issued.

* A history DTC will clear once 255 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Testing

Note: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.

* Passenger presence sensor

* Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module

* Passenger presence sensor wiring harness connector

* Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module wiring harness connector

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the passenger presence sensor.

2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal C and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the Passenger Presence Module.

3. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal A and ground.

If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the Passenger Presence Module.

If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the Passenger Presence Module.

4. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Passenger Presence Module.

5. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the passenger presence sensor signal circuit terminal B and ground.

If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.

6. Ignition ON, test for less than 1.0 volt between the signal circuit terminal B and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.

7. Test for less than 1 ohm between the signal circuit terminal B at the passenger presence sensor harness connector and terminal 6 at the Passenger Presence Module harness connector.

If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.

8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the passenger presence sensor.

Repair Instructions
