Carburetor: Adjustments

Fig. 2 Float level adjustment:

FLOAT LEVEL
If fuel level is within the mark on window of float chamber, with engine stationary, a normal fuel level is indicated. If fuel level is outside the line, adjust by bending float seat. The effective stroke of the needle valve should be about 0.059 in. To check stroke, hold carburetor bottom side up and fully raise the float. Normal needle valve stroke is indicated by a clearance of 0.059 in. between valve stem and float seat, Fig. 2. If necessary, adjust needle valve seat by bending the float stopper.

Fig. 3 Primary throttle valve adjustment:

PRIMARY THROTTLE VALVE
Check that the primary throttle valve is opened by fast idle adjusting screw to an angle of 16°, with manual transmission or 18°, with automatic transmission when choke valve is completely closed. To check opening angle of primary throttle valve, close choke valve completely and measure clearance between throttle valve and wall of throttle valve chamber at center part of throttle valve, Fig. 3. Standard clearances are 0.050 to 0.059 in. with manual transmission and 0.059 to 0.069 with automatic transmission. If needed, throttle valve opening angle may be adjusted with the fast idle adjusting screw. Before measuring the clearance, be certain to turn throttle stop screw in completely.

Fig. 4 Secondary throttle valve linkage adjustment:

SECONDARY THROTTLE VALVE
With primary throttle valve opened to an angle of 47°, the adjust plate is brought into contact with portion (A) of kick lever. With primary throttle valve opened further, the return plate is pulled away from stopper (B), allowing secondary throttle valve to open. To measure secondary throttle valve opening point, measure clearance between primary throttle valve and wall of throttle chamber at center of throttle valve when adjust plate is brought into contact with point (A) of kick lever, Fig. 4. Standard clearance (G2) is 0.24 to 0.30 in., and may be adjusted by bending portion (A) of kick lever.

Fig. 5 Kick lever adjustment:

KICK LEVER
Turn out throttle adjustment screw until primary side throttle valve is completely closed. Loosen locknut on kick lever screw and turn screw until contact is made with return plate, Fig. 5, then tighten locknut.
