Subject: CREAK/SQUEAK NOISE IN "B" PILLAR
Model and Year: 1991 S1 AND T1 TRUCKS
Some 1991 S/T utility vehicles may experience a creak or squeak in the "B" pillar post that is located directly behind the front door. This condition is caused by movement between the floor of the cab and the number two body mount located directly under the "B" pillar and may occur on either or both sides of the vehicle.
To correct the condition, use the following procedure:
1. Remove the # 2 body mount bolt.
2. Raise the body off the mount to obtain clearance between the floor and the top of the body mount.
3. Cut a 4 inch x 4 inch square of 1/32" thick teflon (obtain locally) and drill a 5/8" hole through the center. Insert this between the floor pan and the body mount and lower the body.
4. Clean the body mount bolt and apply Loctite 242 thread locking compound (GM P/N (12345382) or equivalent to the body mount bolt and retorque to 70-80 N-m. (52-59 lbs.ft.).
Notice: Concern exists that some insulating materials may compress over time resulting in a loss of torque to the body mount bolt. For this reason, teflon, 1/32 inch thick, and the thread locking compound on the bolt are being specified.
An alternative to preferred teflon material that can be found in most truck dealerships consists of using three washer pump shields P/N 22063244. The part is also available through GMSPO.
Using this method, cut three sheets to size and locate a 5/8 inch hole in the center of each sheet. Place the three sheets between the floor pan and the mount and lower the body on the mount. Clean the body mount bolt and apply thread locking compound as described above and retorque bolt to 70-80 N-m. (52-59 lbs.ft.)
