Heater Core: Service and Repair
HEATER CASE AND CORE REPLACEMENT

Control Assembly And Cables:
Remove or Disconnect
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to ENGINE COOLING.
Heater Hose Routing:
3. Heater core hoses (22 and 23).
^ Place a clean pan under the vehicle to catch any coolant spillage.
^ Plug the hoses.
^ Allow coolant in the core to drain into the pan.
Distributor Ducts:
4. Heater distributor duct (30).
^ Remove the screws that hold the distributor duct to the distributor case and the distributor duct to the engine cover.
5. Engine housing cover Refer to INTERIOR TRIM.
6. Instrument panel. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND GAUGES.
7. Lower the steering column. Refer to STEERING COLUMN-STANDARD or STEERING COLUMN-TILT.
^ Raise and support the right side of the instrument panel.
Distributor Ducts:
8. Defroster duct (26) to distributor case (25) attaching screws.
9. Distributor to heater case screws.
Control Assembly And Cables:
10. Temperature door cable (42).
^ Fold the cable back for access.
Blower Motor Assembly (Component View):
11. Heater case (13).
^ Three nuts at the engine compartment side of the distributor case and one screw on the passenger side.
^ Tilt the case assembly rearward at the top while lifting up until the core tubes clear the dash openings.
12. Screws (15).
13. Core retaining straps (14).
14. Core (16).

Install or Connect
Blower Motor Assembly (Component View):
1. Core (16) to the heater case (13).
^ Apply a bead of permagum sealer between the core and the case.
2. Core retaining straps (14).
NOTICE: When fasteners are removed, always reinstall them at the same location from which they were removed. If a fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct part number fastener for that application. If the correct part number fastener is not available, a fastener of equal size and strength (or stronger) may be used. Fasteners that are not reused, and those requiring thread locking compound will be called out. The correct torque value must be used when installing fasteners that require it. If the above conditions are not followed, parts or system damage could result.
3. Screws (15).
4. Heater case (13) to the vehicle.
^ Apply a bead of permagum sealer between the heater case and the opening in the vehicle.
^ Tilt the case until the core tubes clear the cowl opening.
Control Assembly And Cables:
5. Temperature cable (42) to the heater case (25).
Distributor Ducts:
6. Distributor duct (30) to the heater case (25).
7. Defroster duct (26) to the heater case (25).
8. Instrument panel. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND GAGES.
9. Steering column. Refer to STEERING COLUMN-STANDARD or STEERING COLUMN-TILT.
10. Engine housing cover. Refer to INTERIOR TRIM.
Heater Hose Routing:
11. Heater core hoses (22 and 23).
Tighten
^ Hose clamps to 1.7 Nm (15 in. lb.).
12. Coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to ENGINE COOLING.
13. New coolant to the radiator.
14. Negative battery cable.
^ Check for leaks.
