Antitheft and Alarm Systems: Description and Operation

SYSTEM OPERATION
Passive Alarm System
The Passive Keyless Entry/Security System (PKE/SS) is a passive alarm system, designed to protect the vehicle and its contents from theft. The Passive Keyless Entry (PKE) II Module unlocks all the doors, when a transmitter comes into range (approximately 8 feet) of any of the three antennae. The three antennae are located in the driver's door, passenger door, and the Liftgate. The PKE Module sends the arm and disarm signals to the Universal Theft Deterrent II (UTD) Module. The UTD II Module can also be disarmed by rotating the driver's door or Passenger's Door Key Lock Switches to the "UNLOCK" position.

Lock Control
The Power Door Lock Switches will unlock all the doors, except for the Liftgate and Sliding Door. However, the Power Door Lock Switches will lock all the doors, including the Liftgate and Sliding Door. With all the doors closed, the UTD II Module will arm 5 seconds after the transmitter leaves the antenna range. The doors will lock and the horn will "chirp" once, to let the driver know the system is armed.

Alarm Activation
When the alarm is triggered, the UTD II Module pulses the horn and Low Beam Headlights at a frequency of 1 Hz. The UTD Module also turns on the Starter Interrupt Relay, which disables the Starter Motor. The alarm times out after approximately 3 minutes. The horn and low beams stop pulsing, but the starter is still disabled (for theft protection). The alarm can be turned off by bringing a valid transmitter into antenna range, or by turning the driver's door or Passenger's Door Key Lock Switch to the "UNLOCK" position.

Transmitter Operation
The transmitters send out a signal for approximately 20 seconds after being moved. A motion sensor in the transmitter detects movement. The transmitter is not sending out a signal when it is motionless for over 20 seconds, which greatly improves battery life.
