Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Typical Timing Mark:

NOTE: The "Vehicle Emission Control Information" label is attached to the front, right-hand shock tower in the engine compartment. Follow all instructions on the label. However, if the label is missing or defaced making it unreadable, use the following procedures:

NOTE: Make timing adjustment with engine at normal operating temperature and the air conditioning system, if so equipped, turned "OFF."

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Set parking brake and block drive wheels. Vehicle should be in Neutral or Park.
2. Check the Service Engine Soon light. It should not be lit.
3. Set the IC (Ignition Control) in the bypass mode by grounding the bypass circuit.

NOTE: The IC bypass circuit is a single tan wire with a black stripe and connector that breaks out from the engine harness located adjacent to the RH shock tower.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. With ignition "OFF," connect the pick-up lead of timing light to the number one spark plug wire. Use an inductive type pick-up. DO NOT pierce the wire, or attempt to install a wire between the boot and the wire. Connect the timing light power leads according to manufacturer's instructions.

2. Start the engine and aim the timing light at the timing mark. The line of the balancer or pulley will line up at the timing mark. If a change is necessary, loosen the distributor hold.down clamp bolt at the base of the distributor. While observing the mark with the timing light, slightly rotate the distributor until the line indicates the correct timing. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 34 Nm (25 lb. ft.). Inspect timing for correct specification (See Underhood Label).

3. Turn off the engine and remove the timing light. Reconnect the number one spark plug wire, if removed.

4. Disconnect Ignition Control (IC) bypass wire from ground and clear any trouble codes from the Electronic Control Module.

NOTE: Idle air speed screw is preset and sealed at factory. Provision for adjustment during tune up is NOT provided. DO NOT attempt adjustment.
