P0500
DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Error:
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit:
Circuit Description
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit is of the magnetic induction type. Gear teeth pressed on the outside diameter of the output shaft assembly induce an alternating current in the sensor as the shaft rotates. The signal goes directly to the VCM. This pulsing action takes place about 2000 times per mile and the VCM will calculate vehicle speed based on the time between pulses.
DTC P0500 Will Set When
^ Vehicle speed below 1 mph.
^ Throttle angle below 3%.
^ Engine coolant temperature above 60°C.
^ Engine speed between 1400 and 4400 RPM.
^ MAP below 20 kPa.
^ All conditions met for 5 seconds.
Action Taken (VCM will default to)
None.
DTC P0500 Will Clear When
Conditions for fault are no longer present and Tech 1 clear DTCs function is used or 50 ignition switch keycycles have passed with no further faults or ignition switch is turned "OFF" and Fuse #9 (ECM B) fuse is removed for 10 seconds.
DTC Chart Test Description
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. This step will determine if DTC 33 is the result of a hard failure or an intermittent condition.
2. This step checks wiring, connections, VCM and VSS.
Diagnostic Aids
Check proper calibration in VCM for speedometer.
