Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 4 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Relieve fuel pressure.
3. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds.
4. Remove ignition module/coil assembly and spark plug wires.
5. Remove serpentine belt, then alternator bracket.
6. Remove left (front) valve cover attaching bolts, then cover.
7. Remove power steering pump, then right (rear) valve cover attaching bolts and cover.
8. Remove rocker arm assemblies, guide plate and pushrods.
9. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then remove.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean all gasket mating surfaces and cylinder head bolt holes in block.
b. Clean threads in block with appropriate tap.
c. Apply suitable sealant to bolt threads.
d. Using sequence shown in Fig. 4, torque cylinder head bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
e. Tighten each bolt an additional 130 degrees in sequence.
f. Tighten center four bolts an additional 30 degrees in sequence.
