Transmission Grinds on a 1-2 or 2-3 Shift
(Contact Technical Assistance for Exchange)
Models:
1996-97 Chevrolet and GMC S Models
with NV1500 Manual Transmission
This bulletin is being revised to add the "EXCHANGE PROGRAM" heading and to clarify the Warranty Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 76-72-02 (Section 7 - Transmission).
Condition
Some owners may comment about a transmission grind noise when shifting from first to second, or from second to third gears.
Correction
Road test the vehicle to verify the concern. Refer to the Diagnosis Troubleshooting charts in Section 7B of the Service Manual for probable causes and corrections. If the cause cannot be determined without disassembling the transmission, contact your divisional technical assistance group with details of the concern. Technical assistance will open a case, and if an exchange is determined necessary, the transmission will be shipped to arrive within 48 hours (96 hours for Canadian Dealers). The replacement transmission will be shipped filled with fluid.
Important:
This exchange program will end on August 31, 1997. Routine repair procedures should be followed after that date.
Important:
Transmissions which have been disassembled (removal of either case half) are not eligible for exchange. Exchange transmissions must not be disassembled and must be returned as a complete unit. Dealerships returning a transmission even partially assembled will be subject to being billed $1,050 for the exchange transmission.
When the exchange unit is received, the removed transmission must be shipped to NVG within 10 working days to avoid a charge-back. Failure to return the transmission will result in the dealership being billed $1,050 which is the value of the exchange transmission. Return shipping information will be included with the exchange transmission.
A package containing the following will be attached to the exchange unit:
Instruction sheet
Reporting form
Return shipping information
Preparation For Shipping

Important:
All return shipping is "freight collect" to New Venture Gear. Shipping information is included with the replacement transmission.
This transmission must use Manual Transmission Fluid, P/N 12377916, because it contains a special friction modifier. Other fluids should not be substituted as they may result in poor shift quality.
