Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

The malfunction indicator lamp (commonly known as MIL or "Service Engine Soon") should turn on with the ignition switch in the "RUN" position and the engine off. The lamp should turn off one to five seconds after the engine starts. If the lamp stays on or turns on while driving, service to the emission control system may be required.
