Removal and Replacement

^ Tool Required:
- J 21366 Converter Holding Strap

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Transmission oil
3. Shift cable.
4. Propeller shaft from transmission. (Two wheel drive only)
- Front propeller shaft from the transfer case (All wheel drive only).
- Transfer case and adapter from the transmission. (All wheel drive only).
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
5. Remove two front torsion bars (All wheel drive only).








6. Transmission mount.
7. Lower the transmission far enough to provide clearance to other components.
8. Oil Level Indicator Tube.
9. Speedometer harness connector.
10. Electrical connectors from the transmission.
11. Transmission cooler lines.
- Cap all openings in the transmission and the oil cooler lines.
12. Starter.
13. Forward (front) torque converter access cap from the bottom front of the torque converter housing.
- Mark the flywheel and torque converter alignment.





14. Three bolts securing the flywheel to the torque converter.





15. Nine bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Note the location of any brackets or clips and move them aside.
16. J 21366 Converter Holding Strap to the converter.
17. Transmission from the vehicle.

Clean
^ Transmission case using a solvent dampened cloth. Do not allow solvent to enter the transmission.
- Air dry transmission case.
^ All hardware and flywheel cover using solvent.
- Air dry hardware and flywheel cover.

Inspect
- All parts for wear and damage.
- All seals and fittings for signs of leakage.
- Torque converter for stripped or broken weld nuts or screw holes.
- Transmission case for porosity.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transmission to engine with nine bolts.
- Ensure that the torque converter is seated properly and that the converter holding strap J 21366 is in place.
- Ensure that the transmission is supported with a transmission jack.
- Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366 while fitting up the marks on the flywheel and torque converter.

Important: The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.

2. Nine bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Install all brackets, clips, and harnesses as they were when removed.
- Do not install the oil level indicator tube.
3. Three bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.
- Using the reference marks, align the torque converter with the flywheel.
- Remove the cap located behind the torque converter access hole.
- Using a large screwdriver and the hole behind the torque converter access hole, push the torque converter forward until the flywheel comes in contact with the torque converter.
- Using the forward (front) torque converter access hole, secure the torque converter to the flywheel with three bolts.
- Tighten:
^ The bolts finger tight to ensure proper converter seating.
^ Bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
4. Forward and rear torque converter access caps to the bottom front of the torque converter housing.
5. Starter.
6. Transmission cooler lines to the transmission.
- Unplug all of the openings in the transmission and oil cooler lines.
- Do not twist or bend the lines during installation.
7. Speedometer harness connector.
8. Electrical connectors to the transmission.
9. Oil level indicator tube with a new seal.
10. Transmission mount.
- Remove the transmission jack.
11. Transfer case and adapter to the transmission. (All wheel drive only).
12. Propeller shaft to the transmission (Two wheel drive only).
13. Propeller shafts to the transfer case (All wheel drive only).
14. Install the front torsion bars (All wheel drive only).
15. Shift cable to the transmission shift lever.
- Lower the vehicle.
16. New transmission oil.
17. Negative battery cable.
18. Start engine and check for transmission oil leaks.
19. Test the transmission for normal operation.
