Engine Removal

- Tools Required
- J 39664 Manifold Cover Set
- J 41427 Universal Lift Bracket
- Or Equivalents

1. Remove the hood.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cables.
2. Evacuate the air conditioning (A/C) system. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the intake duct.
6. Cover the mouth of the intake manifold with the J 39664.
7. Remove the generator wires and clips. Refer to Powertrain Management.
8. Remove the wiring at the fuel injector pump.
9. Remove the wiring from the valve rocker arm clips, including the glow plug relay, and the temperature solenoid.
10. Remove the Boost solenoid. Move the harness aside.
11. Remove the ground strap.
12. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Cooling System.
13. Remove the power steering pump and reservoir.
14. Remove the heater hose at the engine.
15. With the aid of an assistant, remove the radiator and A/C condenser as an assembly. Refer to Cooling System.
- Support the transmission with a jack.

CAUTION: Damage may result from the use of an improper bolt when attaching J36857 into the cylinder head.

- Install the J 41427 to the right rear cylinder head.
16. Raise the vehicle.
17. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
18. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
19. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts (automatic transmission).
20. Remove the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Exhaust System.
21. Remove the front propeller shaft (if equipped). Refer to Steering and Suspension.
22. Remove the starter. Refer to Powertrain Management.
23. Remove the bellhousing bolts.
24. Remove the front engine mount through-bolts.
25. Remove the block heater wire (if equipped).
26. Remove the wiring harness.
27. Remove the transmission cooler lines. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
28. Remove the front battery cable clamp at the oil pan.
29. Remove the fuel return lines at the engine.
30. Remove the oil cooler lines at the engine. Refer to Cooling System.
- Any time the oil cooler lines are disconnected from the quick connectors or the block, the retaining clip needs to be replaced.
- Lower the vehicle.
31. Remove the attaching bolt. Use GM P/N 23503910 or equivalent.
- Tighten the lift bracket bolt to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
32. Remove the lifting device and chain to the J41427 and accessory bracket eyelet.
33. Remove the engine.
